Emily Crawford joined Credera as a graduate from Baylor University. This was her first job out of college, and she was anxious to jump in and do a good job.
A few months in, Emily and her husband, Drew, went out of town to be with family for the holidays. While they were gone, she got a call from their apartment complex letting her know their apartment had caught on fire and subsequently flooded from the sprinklers. Emily and Drew took the next plane home to get back and survey the damage.
Boarding the flight home, she remembers thinking, “I need to send a note to my boss! I don’t know how this will affect work on Monday and she needs as much heads up as possible if I’m going to be out.”
So Emily sent her manager a text. She said something like, “My house caught on fire, so I’m so sorry but I don’t know if I’ll make it to work on Monday. But don’t worry, I grabbed my work computer.”
The response from her team was a moment that defined her. She learned:
Her project director cared much more about her wellbeing than the fact that her work computer was safe.
Her team rallied around her more than she could have imagined, covered her work, took care of the client, and took care of Emily herself. They even contributed to a group gift card to take her shopping for a new wardrobe.
In Emily’s words:
“It’s not necessarily these specific actions, but rather the overall support that I felt at that time, and still do today. It’s always made an impact on me. It’s why I’m still here six years later. And the culture here still shapes the way I lead today, now as a senior manager at Credera. I want my teams to feel supported. I want them to do great client work, yes, but I need them to know I care about them as people more, and I’m so invested in seeing them succeed, both inside and outside of work. That’s what makes Credera such a great community.”
