Q&A With Lu Truong: Geography Lead, Seattle

We sat down with Lu Truong, the office lead of our newly launched Seattle office, to learn more about him and his plans for Seattle. Lu shares what excites him about the Seattle office, a little bit about his perfect weekend, and some advice for early career consultants.

Q&A With Lu Truong

Tell us about your journey to becoming the Seattle office lead for Credera.

After spending 17 years in Dallas, I moved to Seattle in 2017. I ended up returning to Dallas in 2020 and joining Credera last September. Vincent Yates, Credera Partner and Chief Data Scientist, also has Seattle roots. We both have entrepreneurial spirits, and with Credera’s growth, we identified Seattle as a natural next location for expansion. Vincent and I began meeting weekly to execute our strategy, hire in the market, and work with Seattle-based clients.

How would you describe your approach to leadership?

I believe that leadership, at the core, requires you to be consistent with your values, have integrity, and build trust with your teams. I love to understand what is important to people and discover how we can work together to give them opportunities to learn, stretch, and take risks. I greatly enjoy watching my team members grow and realize potential they may not have considered possible before. I think setting high standards for myself and the team while giving them the room and autonomy to execute with a clear focus on serving others is crucial in building a strong organization and culture.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

One of the best lessons I’ve learned is to try to be in the moment and enjoy what you’re doing and who you’re interacting with that day. Work can sometimes create tunnel vision, but learning to look for opportunities each day to make a positive impact in someone’s life has been a great way for me to balance work with what truly matters.

What is a personal goal you’re currently working toward?

I moved back to Dallas during the early stages of the pandemic, which made connecting and getting involved in the community difficult. I am currently working on developing that network at home and establishing consistent ways to give back locally.

You have a totally free weekend. How are you spending your time?

If I have a totally free Saturday, I enjoy sleeping in and grabbing brunch with friends, working out, watching the Sooners play football, and taking Penny, my goldendoodle, to the park.

What advice would you give to early career consultants who aspire to have a career like yours?

I would advise early career consultants to focus on building personal relationships, invest in their personal growth, maintain a growth versus a fixed mindset, be bold, take risks, and don’t chase titles or money. When I look back over the past 20 years of my career, what matters most to me are the relationships I’ve built. People will always be more important than our personal achievements, so don’t lose sight of that in your path toward success.

How would you describe the Seattle team in three words?

Entrepreneurial, Gritty, and Creative

You’re a key leader of our Employee Resource Group CredColor. Can you tell us more about CredColor and why this is an important initiative to you?

CredColor is an employee resource group for people of color at Credera. Our mission and purpose is to drive awareness, visibility, and inclusion opportunities for people of color within Credera, as well as engage with and create an impact in our communities. As a person of color, I am proud and excited for how our CredColor mission and purpose propels our firm forward with diversity as a source of workplace appeal, elevates creativity and innovation, and is a strategic differentiator in client satisfaction.

What excites you most about the future of the Seattle office?

Seattle is unique, and so is Credera. I’m excited to blend Seattle’s tech-foundation, diverse culture, and West Coast presence with Credera’s people-centric culture. I believe we have a great opportunity to expand our firm’s business and make an impact in our Seattle-based client’s local and global markets.
